Bondi High is a coming-of-age music-based drama series set against the vibrant backdrop of Bondi Beach during the tumultuous late 1960s. The series follows a group of teenagers navigating love, ambition, societal expectations, and the harsh realities of the Vietnam War. Through original songs and authentic storytelling, it captures the essence of youth and the universal quest for identity amidst changing times.

Episode 1: Dreams on the Shore

The series opens with Vince, an ambitious Italian-Australian teen, passionately singing "Down to Bondi," dreaming of making his mark through music. We are introduced to his best friend Keith, an aspiring songwriter struggling to find the perfect rhyme. Their friends—Donna, Stacy, Carl, and Mary—join them as they enjoy a sunny day at Bondi Beach. Carl, the arrogant surfer, flirts with the girls, while Mary, the sheltered daughter of a church minister, is intrigued by the new world she is stepping into.

Vince and Keith decide to form a band, hoping to emulate their musical idols. They meet Russell, a talented bass player, and Pete, an Aboriginal guitarist facing prejudice. Together, they begin to pursue their musical dreams, introducing the main characters and their individual aspirations. The episode highlights Vince and Keith's decision to start a band. It hints at a budding romance between Keith and Mary, all against the societal backdrop of 1967 Australia, showcasing emerging cultural shifts.

Episode 2: New Rhythms

As the band starts to rehearse, they realise they need a drummer and better songs. Keith and Mary grow closer while collaborating on music. Mary struggles with her strict upbringing and her father's expectations, feeling torn between her duties at church and her desire to explore the world.

Vince leaves school to start an apprenticeship at the Holden car factory, believing it offers a more secure future. Meanwhile, tensions rise as the first conscription lottery is held, and Russell's birthday is called. He faces the grim reality of being drafted to Vietnam, and the band's formation solidifies with rehearsals in Russell's garage.

Episode 3: Shadows of War

Russell prepares to depart for Vietnam, causing strain among his friends and family. Mary is devastated by her brother's drafting and seeks comfort in Keith, but misunderstandings push them apart. Meanwhile, Carl, ever the opportunist, takes advantage of Mary's vulnerability, leading to a brief, ill-advised relationship.

The band secures their first gig at the school dance. Tensions escalate when Keith discovers Carl's relationship with Mary, leading to a physical altercation at the dance. Meanwhile, Russell writes heartfelt letters from Vietnam, revealing the horrors he faces.

Episode 4: Breaking Point

News arrives that Russell has been killed in action, shattering his family and friends. Mary learns she is pregnant with Carl's child, but Carl flees upon hearing the news. Overwhelmed, Mary runs away from home and seeks refuge with Stacy and Donna.

The community grapples with the realities of war as anti-war protests intensify. The band is in disarray, with Keith and Mary estranged and the group's future uncertain. Pete writes a powerful protest song, highlighting social injustices and the plight of Aboriginal Australians.

Episode 5: Crossroads

As the date of the global telecast approaches, the band is given an opportunity to perform. Keith finishes the song, inspired by Russell's letters, but Mary is hesitant to join. Vince encourages Keith to reconcile with her.

Mary returns home to make amends with her mother, Betty, who supports her daughter's decisions. Keith and Mary confront their feelings, but misunderstandings persist. The band plans to crash the telecast after being denied official participation, showcasing their determination.
